Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The application by Freightliners Ltd. for 12 more artics on A licence was granted by Mr. A. C. Shepherd, South Eastern deputy LA, in Southampton on Monday. There were six objections.

Freightliners Ltd. (Western area), was represented by Mr. T. D. Corpe. He told the hearing that there had been a "phenomenal growth" in the container method of transport, and the application was being made to enable Freightliners to put into effect stage two of its development which was to set up links from Southampton with Liverpool and Manchester.

Mr. Corpe said that at the moment there were 14 lorries operating from the Freightliner terminal at Southampton. Where necessary, the firm hired lorries on a daily basis from outside hauliers, but he stressed that the addition of more vehicles to the Freightliners' fleet would not mean an end to outside hiring.

Mr. J. A. Hill, managing director of Hill and Son (Botley and Denmead) Ltd., said he had never had any complaints about his lorries when hired to Freightliners.

Mr. A. L Lowth, representing the

objectors, claimed that the need for an additional 12 lorries had not been proved. -This is an application made in the hope that the service will attract a lot of business, but nobody is certain of it."

The deputy LA said he thought Freightliners' application was a modest one.
