• Nine out of 14 applicants for B licences to undertake work on M62 motorway through C.M.A. Contractors Ltd., were each granted a licence at a public inquiry in Manchester last week. There were two objectors.
The director of C.M.A. Contractors. Mr. M. Khan, said that his company would soon be starting another job near Liverpool and some vehicles had already been transferred to this site. Between 70 and 75 vehicles were being used at the moment but, said Mr. Khan, he needed about 90 vehicles. There was full-time work to keep all the applicants present busy.
Mr. J. A. Backhouse, for the objectors, said that he was not concerned with vehicles under 16-ton-gross vehicle weight as licences for these could now be obtained without coming to the inquiry. From the figures he had seen as regards the various applicants' earnings he did not think that a profit would be made.
The counsel for the applicants, Mr. S. Moss, asked each applicant if he was satisfied with the rates paid. They all said that they were but stressed the point, however, that in bad weather their earnings were certain to decrease.
