The bus driver on a dark, country service had dismounted in order to tighten a leaky exhaust union, and turned from his diagnosis to find the only passenger, a dear old lady, offering him the use of a candle from her bag of 'groceries.

He had screwed up the slackened nut and again stepped back—to tread on the lady's foot this time, and then he found her standing with her large el:Oak outspread behind him.
