Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN AUXILIARY gearbox for Ford 1-ton trucks was recently placed on the market by the Ikless Gear Co., Ltd., Crown Works, Aston IVIanor, Birmingham. As this company are experts in the manufacture of all types of components for petrol and other vehicles, in. eluding -differentials, gearboxes, rear axles, steering gears, etc., any product from their works is almost certain to prove satisfactory, as ii embodies the experience gained over a long period and in diverse directions. A special feature of the new auxiliary gear is its extreme simplicity and straightforward functioning. It is simply a -two-speed gearbox with the gears constantly in mesh, the changes being_ effected by a double slidingedog clutch giving direct drive in one ptsition, and the increased ratios in the other, whilst, if the clutch is midway between these two positions it gives free engine. The operation of changing ratios or giving free engine is effected by a lever provided with a quadrant having three notches. This arrangement is clearly shown in the illustration. To give additional security to the gear positions, the rod to which the dog clutch operating fork is attached slides in contact with a steel ball and spring plunger. The slid

-B34 lug rod is grooved in three places, and the ball holds it in position by springing into one or other of these grooves.

The gearbox is supplied complete with a new propeller shaft and tube. This is found to be the most satisfactory arrangement, as it gives both the manufacturers and the buyer the satisfaction of knowing that the gearbox is correctly and rigidly mounted, and that the propeller shaft is cut off to the correct length. The old shaft and tube are received back by the manufacturers in lieu of those fitted.

It is claimed that this gear enables the vehicle to travel approximately 33 per cent, faster without -racing the en gine, and with a baying in petrol of 20 per cent. In -conjunction with the Ford gearbox it gives four speeds and two reverse, although it is unnecessary • to use the auxiliary gear for reversing.

The new gear_ .box strikes na as being a particularly well built jab.
