Simplicity, Economy in Upkeep and Low Cost, Features of the Latest SaUnderson,

AT the recently held Smithfield Show at the Royal Agricultural Hall, one of the outstanding exhibits in the agrimotor class was the new lightweight tractor, which is being prodneed by the Saunderson Tractor and Implement Co., Ltd., Elstow Engineering Works, Bedford. This company have been manufacturing farm tractors for some years, and their Universal Model G. 23-25 b.h.p. agrimotor has deservedly built up a good reputation amongst the farming community. As pioneers in the agricultural industry, the company have, at various stages in the advancernent• of tractor design, come forward with new ideas, and it is in response to a demand from agriculturists for a lightweight tractor, which combines the features of reliability, economy and low initial cost that the new machine has made its appearance.

The 'new tractor possesses many slew features, which should have a decided effect in reducing running costs and repair bills, and important improvements have been effected to the engine, transmission back axle, bearings, etc.

The general lay-out and design. of the new Saunderson tractor can he gathered from our elevation and plan drawings reproduced below, It will he seen that the machine is a four-wheeler and that it incorporates an unusual type ef power unit, at least for tractors. The eheine is a two-cylinder V unit, which is provided with overhead valves and set with the crankshaft across the frame. The unit is water-cooled, the fan and centrifugal type water pump being mounted on a separate casing close behind the radiator, which, as is typical Saunderson _practice, is disposed behind a roomy toolbox carried at the front on the chassis frame. The fan and pump are driven by a cross-shaft connected to the engine by a fiat leather belt. Ignition is by Ingh-tenision magneto, an impulse starter being fitted.

The outstanding feature of the engine is that roller bearings are used for the connecting rods and the crankshaft, which, it is claimed, increase the mechanical efficiency of the unit very considerably. It develops 20 b.h.p., and is fitted with a centrifugal governor.

The gearbox forms a unit, With the engine, the drive being by intermediate roller chain to the differential countershaft, and thence final drive is by enclosed roller chains, which are automatically lubricated, to the rear wheels. Two speeds forward and a reverse are given by the transmission, the top gear being 3 m.p.h., low gear 2 mph., and reverse 2 m.p.h. Roller bearings are employed throughout the transmission; they call for no adjustment, and only occasional lubrication—points which should appeal to the farmer who so often perforCe compelled to rely upon unskilled labour.

The steering is of the Ackerman type, the control Wiaeel being just behind the fuel tanks, on of which is for paraffin and has a capacity of 10 gallons, the other, for petrol, accommodating 1 gallon of petrel. The tractor is designed to run on paraffin, and for this purpose the engine is provided with an improved type of vaporizer.

Two brakes are fitted to the tractor, this equipment being very desirable in view of the fact that the machine is capable of employment on the road as well as on the, farm..

The chiefeclimensions of the Saundcrson lightweight tractor are as foljow ;— Height, 4 ft. 4 ins, ; width, 4 ft. wheel centres, 6 ft. 11:4 ins, apart; rear wheels, 42 ins. diameter, '8 Ins, wide; front wheels, 27 ins. diameter, 5 ins. wide; turning radius, 12 ft. ; pulley diameter, 11 ins. ; pulley face, 5 ins.

The tractor deVelops 12 h.p. at the drawbar, and it is capable of pulling a three-furrow plough in average threehorse land and a two-furrow plough in any land. The machine weighs 27 cwt. only, and being particularly wellbalanced will hold the land under bad working conditions.

The price of the new tractor is £195, and it is backed by a guarantee in the matter Of replacements.
