A dairyman at the centre of a Birmingham milk war will continue his cut-price campaign despite a firebomb attack on two of his refrigerated lorries.

The seating and dashboards of both lorries at the Medina Dairies depot in Small Heath were destroyed during the incident on the evening of 9 August Further damage was avoided thanks to a worker at a neighbouring unit who managed to extinguish a second Molotov cocktail before it went off.

Medina, a London-based dairy which began supplying milk to retailers in Birmingham two years ago, angered local dairies by deciding in June to cut 25p off a two-litre carton of milk. Operators picketed the Medina depot on the Whitworth Industrial Estate last month, claiming the move is putting 500 jobs at risk.

But Medina owner Karamat Hussain, who operates eight trucks in Birmingham, says: "Threats were made by the picketers," he says, "and some of my drivers and storemen have been pushed around. But we are not going to stop. We are setting up a distribution network much in the same way as the other dairies would have done when they started. It's the customer who decides what price he wants to pay for his milk.*
