Red Slot...

I was glad to see Rail Express Parcels' Services well praised in your article on Parcels Carriers (CM July 22). The transit time of three days for one of the longer journeys confirmed our own regular performance monitoring statistics which show nationwide delivery at an average of 2.2 days.

An interesting feature of your test is the vital role of the person on the counter who makes the first contact with the customer and I feel sure that each of us will be looking carefully at this aspect of our operation.

Your feature began by stating "Once upon a time it was possible to send a parcel from London to the East Coast of Scotland to arrive within 24 hours". Well, things have progressed, because today, you can do it in eight hours.

If Miss Knight had taken the parcel to King's Cross before 1300 hours and consigned it to lnverkeithing, four miles from Dunfermline, it could have been collected by the consignee at 2100 hours the same day. It would have cost her £2.54 by our premium service — Red Star.

M. CONNOLLY, Chief Parcels Manager British Railways Board.
