In its comments on t Council's consultation doc ment — "The development transportation policy — Ed. burgh area" — the FTA so the document emphasises t importance of public transpt with damaging effect I general transport, safety a the environment.
Extreme traffic manag ment measures to improve b operation will not, necessarf attract more passengers, sa the FTA, nor will they redu traffic, in general, or provii improvements in safety environmental protection. Such measures will, however, impose greater restrictions and excessive costs on other road users.
Recommendations
The FTA has recommended that the Council should give priority to the roads programme in preference to the public transport subsidy and completion of the £50 million new road scheme within 10 years; a high priority to delivery vehicles, "essential vehicle" lines to displace "bus only" lanes; a 16-tons gvw demarcation for localised lorry routes; no major pedestrianisation schemes till the major part of the remaining road building programme is complete; and the abandonment of the misuse of experimental traffic regulation schemes.
