SALES of commercial vehicles in Britain rose by 9.5 per cent, last month, compared with July last year and importers managed to add only 0.1 per cent to their July 1976 total of 10.8 per cent of the market.
In the light vans and pickups market, Leyland led the field with 32.9 per cent, closely followed by Ford, 30 per cent, and Bedford, 27.4 per cent.
But in the medium range market, it was a different story. Ford took 43.5 per cent of sales, with 2,237 out of a total of 5,140, followed by Bedford, 17.4 per cent and 891 sales and Leyland, 17 per cent and 876 sales.
The heavy end of the market was yet another tale, Ford still led with 1,355 sales, including 19 Dutch-built vehicles, for 29.4 per cent of the 4,601-vehicle market.
Leyland was second — 991 sales and 21.5 per cent — with Bedford on 907 vehicles and 19.7 per cent. Chrysler had 7.8 per cent, with 357 sales. The hi-T.:lies, issued by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, also show that overall sales rose by 4.9 per cent to 129,502 in the first six months of the year, compared with the first six months of 1976.
