THREE men who traded as Messrs. 1 Bermondsey Road Service, Snead Street, New Cross, London, S.E.14, were each fined a total of £30 with £5 5s. costs at Greenwich last week. They pleaded guilty to two summonses for using goods vehicles without a carriers' licence, on February 1 and April 12.
The men. Henry James Martin, John Patrick McDonnell and Edwin George Gosbee, had been convicted of licence offences at Dartford and Tower Bridge earlier this year. and Mr. A. A. Pereira, the magistrate, observed, "It does not matter how much you fine them, it pays them to do this."
Martin told the magistrate that the previous fine had not been paid and that the business "has gone up in the air." McDonnell confirmed that they were now out of business.
The magistrate observed: I would be very interested to know how much money you have made out of these transactions. I hope you will consider that you have been treated very reasonably."
