More Adhesive Engine Oils

RESEARCH by the Vigzol Oil Co., 1 1, Ltd., Greenwich, London, S.E.10, into agents which will increase the surface tension of lubricating and fuel oils has led to the introduction of two new multigrade oils known as Activated Vitaflow. Vigzol state that in spite of viscosity index improvers, some multi-grade oils tend to be insufficiently viscous and will not maintain an adequate oil film on stationary, cold engine components for long periods.

This permits corrosion to take place and does little to reduce cold-starting wear. The new Vitallow oils are said to be so adhesive, due to the additive process employed, that they will provide an unbroken oil film at all times. They are offered in S.A.E. 10W/30 and 20W/40 grades.

Cold Construction PERISHABLES carried in refrigerated bodies must not be placed flush against the body sides as cooling air has to circulate freely around them. To ensure that flush loading does not occur. the normal bodybuilders' practice is to

fit separate beading strips on the flat interior surfaces.

However, a type of construction employed for the interior walls of an insulated trailer just completed by C.. L. Whitaker and Co., Ltd., Grimsby, uses corrugated light-alloy panels for the body interior. The panels, supplied by the Northern Aluminium Co., Ltd., Banbury, Oxford, are ridged at regular intervals. Use of the sheet, known as Noral Miniature Mansard, has made possible a saving in assembly time whilst providing a neat finish and eliminating dirtcollecting crevices which can occur where separate beading is fitted,

Transport Engines THE development of the internal' combustion engine for road transport is covered, from the German point of view, by "From Engines to Autos," originally published in 1957. and now available in an English translation from the Henry Regnery Co., Chicago, U.S.A.. at $6.00,

The book deals with the life and work of Otto, Daimler, Benz, Diesel and Bosch, and was written by joint authors who are executives of manufacturing concerns founded by or associated with the subjects of the book. They are: Dr. E. Diesel (M.A.N.), Dr. G. Goldbeck (Deutz) and Dr. F. Schildberge r (Daimler-Benz).

Free-flowing Sealer ASEALING compound which can be used in all riveted joints and will withstand stoving is offered by Evomastics, Ltd, Stafford. It is known as M.105 and is said to have particularly good adhesion to any clean, firm surface, including weatherstrip, and to be freeflowing even under cold conditions. The compound is available in grades to suit air-operated and manually operated caulking guns.

Thin Masking rAA PRESSURE-SENSITIVE masking tape produced by Permacel Tapes, Ltd., Slough. Bucks, has a paper backing only .0008-.0009 in. thick. This minimizes paint build-up at the edges of the tape, which has a high tensile strength and good elasticity, permitting it to conform to small radii. It is known as Permacel P.93 and is stated to be resistant to ageing whilst being impervious to all normal paint and varnish solvents.
