Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

lerNOWN as the Routeman, a new 1. Scammell rigid eight-wheeled chassis is available in two wheelbase lengths and with a choice of four power units. There are two rear-bogie layouts, and braking on six or eight wheels may be specified, whilst a variety of wheel and tyre equipment is offered.

The basis of the Routeman is an allbolted chassis frame with tubular and channel-section cross-members. The side members are 74T-in.-thick pressings with 3-in, flanges and a maximum depth of 12 in. Two Gardner and two Leyland oil engines are offered, these being the fiLW 112-b.h,p.. 6LX 150-b.h.p., 0.600 125-b.h.p. and 0.680 • 161-b.h.p. units respectively.

When the Gardner engines are fitted, the clutch is a 16-in.-diameter unit, whilst with the Leyland engines a 16.25-in.diameter clutch is employed. The standard gearbox in all cases is a Scammell sixspeed constant-mesh unit for which a choice of ratios is offered. The two principal sets of ratios are 5.7, 4.07, 2.53, 1.61, 1 and 0.713 to I. and 6.55, 4.07, 2.53, 1.65, 1 and 0.622 to 1 forward, with respective reverse ratios of 7.28 and 8.37 to 1.

Power Take-off A full-torque power take-off can be mounted on the left of the gearbox, and when this has a rearward-facing output flange its ratio is 0.794 to 1, whilst with a sideways-facing output flange ratios of 0.815, 0.408 and 0.272 to 1 are offered.

A two-piece propeller shaft drives from the rear of the gearbox directly into the Scammell double-reduction axle in the case of single-drive bogies, or into the leading Leyland overhead-worm axle when a double-drive bogie is employed.

The Scammell axle is available with a choice of six ratios, varying from 7.13 to 11.28 to I, whilst the Leyland axles have a standard ratio of '7.25 to 1. A third differential can be incorporated in the double-drive bogie. When a single-drive bogie is employed four-spring suspension with balanc beams is supplied, whereas the double drive bogie has a two-spring layout witl inverted trunnion-mounted semi-cllipti springs.

Air-pressure braking is specified, an, brakes can be supplied on either all fou axles or the leading and both rear-bogi. axles only. hi all cases the front-axl brakes are cam-operated, whilst single drive bogies have cable-operated toggle action units,

Brake Area of 1,150 sq. in

On double-drive bogies, cam-operate' brakes are fitted. The total lining are. varies according to the number and typ of brakes fitted, the area for a single drive, six-wheel-braked chassis bein. 840 sq. in. That of a chassis with doubl drive and eight-wheel brakes is 1,151 sq. in. The hand brake acts on the rear bogie wheels only in all cases.

Tapered-roller thrust bearings are use at the front axles, and the king pins ar carried in phosphor-bronze bearings Manes cam-and-double-roller steerin, gear is employed, and this has a ratio o 28.5 to 1, giving 5+ turns of the steerin, wheel from lock to lock. Hydrauli assistance for the steering is offered.

The choice of tyre equipment include 9.00-20-in. (12-ply), 10.00-20-in. (12-ply and 9.00-24-in. (12-ply) with twin rea Wheels in all cases, and 9,00-20-in. (I2-ply front tyres with 14.00-16-in. (18-ply) singl rear or 9.00-244n. (12-ply) with 14.00 20-in. (18-ply) single rear. Other tyn equipment can be supplied if required.

Paired Headlamps The standard fuel tank is a cylindrica unit with a capacity of 55 gal., whils 24v. electrical equipment is used through out. Single or paired headlamp layout are offered. Flashing direction indicator can be supplied, and there is a choice o electric or air-operated windscreen wipers_ The standard plastics cab is in twi main sections. The lower section incor porates the front wings and the mail framing members, and has a four-poin mounting. The upper section has a deer two-piece curved windscreen and three piece rear window and includes the doom Removal of the upper section to alloN the engine to be withdrawn is simpliflei by the provision of plug-and-socket elec trical connections. Optional cab fitting include radio, heating and demistin, equipment, windscreen washers, rea quarter lights and a firescrcen.

On 9.00-20-in. tyres, the Routeman ha a dry taxation weight of 6 tons 8 cw1 Its gross weight rating as a solo vehicl is 24 tons. Additional equipment avail able includes a 60-point automatic chassi lubricator, front bumper bar, and spar wheel and carrier.
