THE first steps towards gaining public support for a Guilleband-type report on conditions in the bus industry were taken by London busmen last week. Their leaders at 11. garages sent out a circular letter outlining their proposals to the remaining 94 garages of London Transport.

The proposals, not sanctioned by the Transport and General Workers' Union, are: (1) To petition Mr. Frank Cousins, general secretary of the union, to demand his direct intervention with London Transport in support of an inquiry. UNIONS ACCUSE EMPLOYERS •

THE executive of the Confederation of

Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions, at York last week, accused employers of -" delaying tactics " -over its claim for an immediate wage increase for some 3m. workers. The confederation submitted its annual claim seven weeks ago, much earlier than usual, in the hope that negotiations could start this month instead of in the autumn.

After the meeting Mr. _lames Matthews, the new president, warned that delay might eventually lead to unofficial action by militant shop stewards.

GLASGOW JOINS A TRAINING SCHEME

LASGOW Transport Department has ‘--3. received approval from the transport committee to participate in the executive training scheme of the Municipal Passenger Transport Association. The scheme starts in October and each of the participating bodies will provide one place for a suitable trainee at an annual salary of 1650-085.
