ALTHOUGH production of commercial vehicles in June felt short of the record weekly output of 4,419 units set up in May, it was above the 4.000-a-week mark. The total number of vehicles built during the five-week period of June was 20,109 (4,022 a week); compared with 17,678 in the four-week period of May. Of June's output, 8.496 vehicles were for export and 11,613 were for the home market.
Production by classes in June, says the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, was as follows:—Under 15 cwt., 8,841; 15 cwt. to 6 tons, 9,176; over 6 tons, 572; motorbuses and trolleybuses, 1,363, and battery-electrics -;excluding prams), 157.
During the first six months of the year, 105,207 vehicles were manufactured, of which-49.916 were for export And 55,291 for home use. Although production will drop this month because of holidays, the high rate of output in the half-year promises that 1949 will set Up a new record.
From January to June, 44;795 vehicles tinder 15-cwt. payload capacity were made. Those of 15-cwt.-6-ton capacity numbered 48,352, over 6 tons 3,609, motorbuses and trolleybuses 7,270 and battery-electrics (excluding prams) 1,181.
Figures for the production of works trucks show that 442 machines were built in May (140 for export and 302 for home service). The total for the first five months of theyear was 1,919, made up of 1,313 trucks for home users and 606 for export.
