WHEELS.— Goodyear.— No. 251002, dated 20th November, 1908.—This invention relates to the method of mounting a wheel on its bush, or huh, so as to provide a driving connection between the two members; it is an addition to the in

vention disclosed in specification No. 20,453 of 1906. The hub or bush of the wheel has a substantial flange at one end and this flange is provided with a number of grooves or notches spaced equidistantly round its circumferance. These notches are adapted to accommodate the heads of the wheel bolts when the latter is driven home on to the hub—thus a positive driving connection between the wheel and its hub is obtained. This arrangement is especially applicable to steering wheels and enables the latter to be interchangeable.

MOTOR FIRE-ENGINES. — Merryweather.—No. 17,573, dated 21st August, 1908.—This invention relates to motor fire-engines in which the pump is driven by means of a tail-shaft projecting through the change-speed gear casing. The present improvements relate to the provision of two speeds for the tail-shaft, thus enabling the pump to deliver two different quantities of water. The tailshaft is arranged co-axially with respect to the driving shaft, and to one end is fixed one member of a dog clutch. The other member of the clutch is carried by a sliding sleeve which is mounted en the driving shaft. This sliding sleeve also carries a spur wheel, and this wheel, when the dog clutch is free, can engage with a second spur wheel ; the lastnamed spur wheel is carried by a second

sleeve that is loosely mounted on the countershaft of the change-speed gear. The second sleeve also carries a pinion which is in constant gear with a spur wheel rigidly connected to the tailshaft. Thus it will be seen that, when

the dog clutch is in engagement, a direct drive will be obtained, and so long as it is allowed to remain so engaged, the sleeve which is carried on the countershaft will rotate idly, To obtain the second speed, the sleeve is moved along the driving shaft so as to disengage the dog clutch, and, at the same time, cause the spur wheel which is carried thereby to mesh with the spur wheel carried by the sleeve on the countershaft.

SPEED-LIMIT DEVICES.—McComb. —No. 15,485, dated 21st July, 1908.— This invention relates to a device which operates, on a predetermined speed of a vehicle being attained, to throttle or cut off the fuel or source of energy to the motor. The device comprises a governor, that is driven from the steering wheels by means of a flexible shaft, and a rod connected to the governor, which is adjustably connected to the throttle valve

in such manner that its position may be altered, from time to time, so as to permit the device to be set to operate at any desired speed. The throttle comprises a plug having a number of holes of progressive diameters. When the vehicle is travelling at an excessive speed, or beyond a predetermined speed, the gover

nors draw the rod upwardly, thus moving the plug so as to bring a hole of less diameter into operation, and this movement continues until the throttle is entirely closed, a by-pass being provided in order

to prevent the engine's stopping. The connection, by which adjustment is made between the valve rod and thethrottle is enclosed in a locked casing.
