Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

After releasing the first details earlier this month (CM 12 April), Daf gave the Euro-6 MX 12.9-litre engine its public debut at Amsterdam this week.

It uses a combination of EGR and SCR to hit the tough Euro-6 NOx limit. And while swept volume, power and torque outputs are unchanged (410hp, 460hp and 510hp nominal ratings) it is different from the Euro-5 MX. Fuel-injection is now via Delphi commonrail instead of electronic unit-pumps, raising maximum injection pressures from 2,000bar to 2,500bar. When required, a seventh injector will spray fuel into the exhaust ahead of the particulate filter, raising exhaust temperature if it is too low to burn the soot in the filter. Variable turbine geometry improves the Holset turbocharger’s efficiency across the engine-speed range and helps drive EGR.

Daf dubs the new engine MX-13, perhaps indicating that we will see a downsized version as the Euro-6 replacement of the 9.2-litre PR engine. Daf plans to reveal its full Euro-6 plans at Hannover in September, dropping a heavy hint that we will see the engines installed in new trucks too. Not before time: the XF cab can be traced back to 1987, the CF’s to 1993, so with 25 and 19 years under their respective belts, these cabs have done a spectacularly good job.
