of recommendations: • Use key performance indicators (KPIs)to measure performance internally and externally; vehicle performance can be compared against vehicle performance, depots can be compared against each other and companies can be compared against the sector norm.
• Vehicle fill is a "critically important" KPI and operators should adopt simple processes to record and analyse performance in this aspect of vehicle utilisation. This could include requesting that drivers record estimates of vehicle fill, completing data for the start and end of each trip.
• Operators should record and analyse their data
over a significant time period to identify trends in performance.
• Key target areas for improvements are: reducing overall kilometres travelled; reducing empty running; and reducing instances of low vehicle utilisation.
A Freight Best Practice spokesman says: "Operators need to establish KPIs and by using this survey they can perfect their own performance with 'best in class' in their own industry. This is just a one-off look at the industry, but operators should see benchmarking as a routine instead of an exception."
