• A group of 24 Northumberland tipper operators hopes to arrange pay-claim meetings with Tarmac, ARC, Tiicon and Ready Mix Concrete. The Tynedale Tipping Group claims that operators rates have not increased since 1985. It is looking for a 20% increase but has been refused meetings with the firms it has approached. "The trouble is there are too many lorries and not enough work," says the organisation. "Companies are telling the group there is no point meeting because there are no increases and plenty of other hauliers."
The group's membership has almost halved since it was launched 20 years ago.
