Dock-levelling ramp

A Kelley hydraulically-operated docklevelling ramp is being marketed in this country by R. S. Stokvis and Sons Ltd: The unit is produced by Kelley Inc. of Wisconsin, USA; the Stokvis company has manufacturing rights in Europe for the leveller as well as distribution rights.

The leveller mechanism is sunk into the loading bay and in the horizontal position the ramp is level with the loading-bay deck. Positioning the ramp is controlled by the driver by means of a cable mechanism. As the ramp is raised, a 16in. lip at the peak of the ramp is extended and locked in position.

The lip is lowered until it contacts the deck of the vehicle by the driver standing on the ramp. and automatically remains in contact with the vehicle floor. This allows for variations in height resulting from vehicle loading.

When the vehicle moves away the lip is automatically retracted into the vertical position, which ensures that it is not struck by another vehicle reversing up to the bank. Marketed by: R. S. Stokvis and Sons Ltd., Stokvis House, Central Avenue, West Molesey, Surrey. The well-known BP Super Visco-static 10W40 and BP Super Visco-static 20W-50 multigrade engine oils now have improved characteristics. BP's entire production is concentrated on the new oils which have been evolved to cater for current requirements regarding low-temperature viscosity and hightemperature stability. Sludge formation at low temperatures is combated by the favourable dispersancy property of the Super Visco-static oils. Cycling tests have been made of a Perkins 4.99 diesel running on this oil which simulate the worst type of operating conditions.

Distributed by: Shell-Mex and BP Ltd., ShellMex House, Strand, London, WC2.

Lifting sling

A special plaited construction on the new range of lifting slings produced by John Shaw Ltd. is claimed to overcome many of the problems associated with wire-rope slings. These slings, which, by presenting a flat surface to loads being lifted, reduce the risk of damage, have a high break strength in relation to their width: a sling produced from eight wire-ropes of iin. diameter has a nominal break strength of 8 tons and a safe working load of 2 tons.

Slings in this range can be supplied to customers' own requirements and can be fitted with a wide selection of end fittings.
