• Durham District Services Ltd. la company formed at the end of 1950 when three north east independent operators, fearing nationalization, sold out to the State) is being absorbed by United Automobile Services Ltd. The latter company has managed DDS as an integral unit ever since its formation.
The process of absorption began at the end of 1967 when the accounts of Durham District were transferred to United. At the same time the Barnard Castle depot of the former company was closed, and the two DDS services between Darlington and Barnard Castle were then jointly operated by DDS and United, while the service to Middleton-in-Teesdale was transferred entirely to United.
Now the parent company has applied to take over all the remaining licences held by Durham District. No definite date has yet been fixed for the final absorption, but already the 65 buses of the DDS fleet are being repainted in the red and cream livery of United and bearing United fleet names. Previously DDS buses and coaches were painted green and cream to distinguish them from United vehicles.
The three independents which sold out were Darlington Triumph Services Ltd., the ABC group of Ferryhill and Express Motor Services of Durham City.
