CHI"feature of a 43-cu.-yd. bulkrefuse transporter supplied this week to Liverpool Engineer and Surveyor's Department by Glover, Webb and Liversidge, Ltd., 561, Old Kent Road, London, S.E.I, is a novel rear suspension system which allows the articulated outfit to negotiate soft ground without excessive sway.

Connected by an S.A.E. pin-type coupling to a Leyland Beaver tractor, the semi-trailer has deep channelsection longitudinal members and tubular. cross-members Aluminium body pillars are bolted to outriggers from the frame and the light-alloy panelling is riveted to the pillars to form a flush interior, protruding rivet heads being ground down so as not to foul the moving barrier. Interior dimensions of the body are: length, 23 ft. '7 in,; width, 7 ft. 6 in.; height, 6 ft. 6 in.

Roof hatches may be opened to provide three loading apertures each 7 ft. long and 4 ft. wide. The load is discharged by. means of the harrier and a Transport moving floor, the weight upon which is carried by the guides under the four roller chains.

The barrier, which has sheets of gal, vartized steel, is mounted on two pivots which compensate for inequalities of load or stretch between the chains. A 12-ton load may be carried. The floor is tilted slightly and the height at the rear is 5 ft. I in.

A gearbox-driven pump on the tractor is connected by pipeline to a hydraulic vane-type motor at the front of the semi-trailer, and the motor drives the gearbox for the moviitg floor by chain. This gearbox has epicyclie and worm reduction and provides forward and reverse ratios. Time taken to discharge a:load. and rettirn. the barrier forward is three minutes. There is a pair of doors at the rear of the body.

The maximum weight which the eight rear wheels are designed to carry is 16 tons. There are two in-line bogies suspended from the chassis by fabricated trunnion brackets. Front and rear pairs of wheels of each bogie are mounted on short double-ended axles which are freely pivoted on needleroller bearings to afford each wheel a movement -of12 degrees above and below the horizontal.

The bracket upon which an axle pivots is connected at the bottom to the eye of an underslung leaf spring, and at the top to a wishbone member pivoted on the trunnion bracket. Each pair of wheels has an independent vertical range of movement of 10 in,

Dunlop 10.50-13 .10-ply tyres are fitted, and' theGirling hydraulic brakes are operated by air pressure. There is a Clayton Dewandre master cylinder on the off side of the chassis for the rear pairs of wheels and another on the near side for the front pairs. This arrangement is a precaution against uneven braking in the event of master-cylinder failure. Brake cylinders are fixed to the axles and operate through compensating linkages.

Landing gear is of the Davies Magnet type. The semi-trailer is finished in aluminium paint and will be operated on a shuttle system with existing smaller units.
