Hot Water on Tap in Mobile Shop

jni MOBILE grocery shop operated by Mr. Frank Bunce, of Reddish, has recently been fitted with a simple and effective heater designed by Mr. S. H. Titterton, Sykes Road Garage, Reddish, Lanes, to supply hot water to wash the assistant's hands.

Waste heat from the vehicle exhaust is utilized through a Titterton silencer, which takes the form of a heatexchanger. Runs of water-conveying copper pipe are arranged within the outer case of the silencer and the hot gases entering the silencer are diffused by an inner cone to pass over the pipes. Thermo-syphon circulation is obtained by having the water inlet at the base of the silencer casing and the outlet at the top.

A header tank incorporated in the water circuit occupies free space above the windscreen. It supplies the tap mounted above a stainless-steel sink near the entrance door.

Two miles' running is, sufficient to heat eight gallons of .water. Lagging the tank and pipes would reduce heat., losses, but its absence enables the heat radiated from the header tank to warm the interior of the vehicle.

Although Mr. 13unce's vehicle has a Leyland petrol engine, it is stated that equal heating efficiency has been obtained from an oil-engine exhaust.

Experiments have shown that the exhaust water-heating system can be adapted readily for heating coaches, buses and lorry cabs. The heatexchangers are claimed to have an effective life far in excess of standard silencers, and trials are in progress with glasspol casings which are expected to outlast the life of a vehicle.

Water-heating conversions can be carried out at Sykes Road Garage in a day, and the average price of an 8-gal. unit is approximately £25.

Two-speed Drill by Waif A GENERAL-DUTY fin.-capacity I-1 two-speed portable electric drill is now available from Wolf Electric Tools, Ltd., Pioneer Works, Hanger Lane, London, W.5. It performs fin. highspeed and fin, low-speed drilling operations in metal at the correct cutting speeds and, it is claimed, with a minimum of effort.

When drilling deep fin.-diameter holes in hard materials, high penetration speeds may be 'achieved by drilling a fin.-diameter pilot hole before boring out to the required diameter. In hardwood the drilling capacities are higher-1 in. diameter on the low, and

in. diameter on the high speed.

Two models known as TS24c and the TS24 are being produced and are available with either a fin:-capacity drill chuck or a No. I Morse taper socket. The TS24, which is fitted with the Morse taper socket, has a slightly n14 higher capacity on low speed than its companion model.

Universal motors for both D.C. and single-phase A.C. 25/60 cycles mains can be supplied for 100-110, 110-130, 150-160, 200-220 and 220-250 volts. In ' addition 32and 50-volt supplies can be catered for by special order.

Accessories will include a chuck and arbor for fitting to the drill, a drill stand and machine vice. A full range of wood-drilling hits up to the maximum capacity of the machines is also available, together with a range of hole cutters.

These are radiator preservative, radiator leak seal, radiator cleaner No. 1 and-radiator Cleaner No. 2 , The No. 2 cleaner is said to be capable of cleaning the worst-clogged and corroded cooling systems, but because it consists of separate acid -and alkaline solutions and requires careful use, it is available only to the Motor trade or fleet operators. It is poured into the cooling system, and a vehicle can be used in normal service for the 48-hour period while the cleaner is doing its work.
