NCREASES in wages proposed in R.H. (61) were agreed last week by the Road Haulage Wages Council after • an unusually large number of representations had been considered The matter now goes to the Minister of Labour.

It is understood that the unions' proposal for a reduction in maximum daily working hours was not discussed, although the employers and the unions have had informal talks on the subject.. A formal meeting between the two sides will be held next Wednesday, when the whole question of terms for the operation of heavy goods vehicles at 30 m.p.h. will be considered.

B.R.S. GRANT HIGHER PAY INCREASES in wages ranging from L 7s. to I6s. a week, to be effective from April 8, have been awarded by British Road Services to 20,000 operating staff. These amounts are similar to those agreed by the Road Haulage Wages Council for free-enterprise workers.

B.R.S. have also increased the pay of 10,000 administrative and clerical workers by 5 per cent as from February 25.

NEW HAULIERS SELL OUT

ALMOST half the members lost during the past year by the Metropolitan and South Eastern Area of the Road Haulage Association were newcomers who bought units from British Road Services and then sold out. Mr. J. Turner, area chairman, makes this disclosure in his annual report. A large number of new members was gained.

Mr. Turner says that the national finance committee of the Association are discussing the question of a national licensing and objection scheme which would be charged to the headquarters funds of the R.H.A. in return for the increased subscriptions.

He complains of the failure of many hauliers to send information for inclusion in the area directory.

AUS COMPANIES TO REPLY TO UNIONS

NEXT Tuesday the National Council of the Omnibus industry will meet to hear the employers' reply to the unions' claim for an increase of £1 2s. a week in the wages of provincial company busmen.

A statement last week by a municipal general manager that a substantial increase in wages for municipal busmen was pending was denied this week by a representative of the Transport and General Workers' Union.
