Northern.

GAZETTE 33 outlines decisions in the matter of several appeals to the Minister of Transport. On February 3rd last Middlesbrough Corporation appealed against the refusal of the Traffic Commissioners to grant permission to the corporation to run buses on certain routes outside its district and to issue a licence in respect of a stage. carriage service between Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees. As e. result, Orders have been made on the Commissioners.

014 Middlesbrough Corporation and the Tees-side Railless Traction Board have also won their case in an appeal heard on February 2nd, whilst the Minister has made an Order on the Commissioners in .the matter of an appeal by Middlesbrough Corporation against the granting to Redwing Safety Services, Ltd., of a road-service licence subject' to conditions.

On February 1st an inquiry was held intothe appeal of Gosforth Urban District Council against the decision of the Commissioners to attach to licences cer

tain conditions for the protection of local services of Newcastle Corporation and, in this case, an Order has been made on the Commissioners to attach such conditions.

Yorkshire.

MUNICIPAL authorities, particularly the corporations of Scarborough, Doncaster and Bradford, figure prominently in the objections or representations column of the section of Gazette 52 dealing with the sitting to be held at York on April 26th. Tours and excursions will be the chief matter for consideration.

An application has been received from the Birmingham and Midland Motor Omnibus Co., Ltd., for the backjug of a licence for excursions and tours previously operated by Mr. E. W. How, trading as Highfield Motor Services, Eastern.

THERE will be a fair amount of objec

tion to applications for licences at the Eastern Commissioners' sitting at Colchester from April 27th-29th, the objectors including the London and North Eastern Railway Co., Eastern National Omnibus Co., Ltd. and Green Line Coaches, Ltd. The Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., has applied for a backing for alicence to provide a new group of extended tours from Glasgow, embracing the Wye Valley, Devonshire, Norfolk Broads, Cheltenham, etc.

South Wales.

FURTHER cases to be dealt with by the Commissioners at their sitting at Pontypridd on April 80th are outlined in Gazette 38. The Newport sitting, to be held from April 25th-27th, will be a busy one. We notice amongst the

applicants at the latter hearing the Western Welsh Omnibus Co.' Ltd., Lewis and James, Ltd., Red and White Services, Ltd., and the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd. There will not be a great deal of objection raised at this sitting, as in the case of that to be held at Bridgend from May 2nd-4th.

Western.

MOST of the proceedings at the Western Commissioners' sitting at Bristol, from April 28th-29th, should go smoothly, but the granting of two sets of applications for express-service licences covering the routes from Bristol to such places as Minehead, Bournemouth, Weymouth, Southsea and Torquay, will be opposed by the Southern Railway Co., Elliott Brothers (Bournemouth), Ltd., and E. Jones and Son, Ltd.

Southern.

IN Gazette 54 we notice that several sections of the Army have withdrawn their applications for licences for excursions and tours.

South Eastern.

GAZETTE 56 gives details of a large number of licences granted, particularly in respect of excursions and tours. This publication also suggests that the proceedings at Tunbridge Wells, from April 20th-22nd, will be interesting, for there will be a great deal of opposition to the granting of licences. The municipal authorities of Hastings, Ramsgate, Brighton and Broadstairs and St. Peters figure in the list of objectors, along with the East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., Southdown Motor Services, Ltd., and other well-known concerns. Opposition will, of course, be forthcoming from the Southern Railway Co., and will be directed against independent operating concerns.

Metropolitan.

THE proceedings at the Metropolitan Commissioner's sitting to be held in London from April 27th-28th should go through smoothly, for only one application is opposed. Excursions and tours will be the chief matters for consideration and the applicants include McShane's Motors, Ltd., .Keith and Boyle (London), Ltd., Elliott l3rothers (Bournemouth), Ltd., and City of Oxford Motor Services, Ltd. Glenton Friars (Road Coaches), Ltd., will make application in respect of its NewcastleLondon service, which has been running for a long time.
