An Occasional Chat on Subjects and Problems of Interest to those Who are Engaged, or About to be Engaged, in Running Commercial Vehicles for a Living.

MANY readers will, no doubt, prefer to have a little explanation of the tables which I gave last week. Probably the best way of giving that explanation will be by way of 'example, and, after a, little consideration, I decided to select my examples from amongst those which have been put up to me from time to time by readers of this paper. I have, therefore, looked through my file, and the following are answers to queries, which have, as a matter of fact, been dealt with in another way some time previously.

Charge for Hire of a One Ton Van.

On one occasion, a -correspondent, who was the proud possessor of a one ton van, was engaged on contract work which involved him in a daily run of 50 miles, during which-he had to deliver 40 parcels. He wanted to know what his charge ought to be. Now, if we consider this case in conjunction with the tables given last week, we have, for a solid-tyred one-tonner, 9, charge of 22 8s. a day, plus 9d. a mile. There are 50 miles covered during each day, so that the total mileage charge is 50. times 9d., which amounts to 21 17s. 6d. The total charge for a solidtyred one-tonner should, therefore, be 22 8s., plus 21 17s. 6d., namely, £4 5s. 6d. My correspondent did not state whether his vehicle was solid-tyred or not. If it happened to have been fitted with pneumatics, then he, would have had to charge a little more, on account of the higher tyre cost of the pneumatictyred vehicle of this class. His daily charge would have been the same, viz., 22 8s. Od. The mileage charge would, however, be lld, a mile, and an additional charge, therefore, instead of being 21 17s. 6d., would have been 22 5s. 10d., the total 24 13s. 10d. per day including 50 miles run. If a charge had to be made out per "parcel, the average cost of delivering each parcel would be 2s. qd, in the case of a solidtyred) van and 2s. 41d. if pneumatic-tyred.

In another letter, a correspondent owning anthree ton lorry was offered a contract which involved him in travelling 180 miles each two days. Considering this in the same way, the daily charge would be £3 8s., so that for each two days the time charge would be 26 16s. The mileage charge, which is, as has been pointed out, additional to the time charge, is is. 2d. a mile ; 180 miles at-is. 2d. a mile is 210 10s. The total hire charge, therefore, for each contract of 180 miles, on the assumption that it occupies two days, would be 217 6s.

In another case, work was offered Jar a Ford van, which involved it in travelling 28tmiles out and 28 miles home each day. There was not much. terminal delay, but the road was bad and hilly; this meant slow travelling, so that not more than one double journey per day could be attempted. For -this work the charge should be 22 2s. for the day, plus 56 times 9d. for the mileage another two guineas ; total, 24 4s, for each double journey.

The Charges for Hire of a Four Ton Lorry.

Another example concerns a four ton -lorry. This was doing long-distance work over a routet72 miles long. The circumstances were such that only two double journeys a week could be accomplished; that is to say, the maximum weekly mileage wasz‘288. The time charge for a four-tonner is £20 per week. The mileage charge of is. 3d. a mile for 288 miles amounts to £18; the total charge for this work should, therefore, be 238 a week. Yet another ease about a four ton van. The writer, in this instance, had done three days' work andshad charged 2s. 6d. a, mile. The three days' work involved him altogether in 228 miles. The daily charge, £3 15s., amounts to Ell 5s. for the three days. The mileage charge for 228 miles at is. 3d. is 214 5s. ; total, 225 10s. At half-a-crown a mile, he would have

received 228 10s. THE _SKOTCH
