Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Van sales slide by 25%

VAN SALES ARE down 24.7% in August, compared with a year ago, as operators continue to be hindered by the current economic downturn.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) also reveals that truck sales have dipped by 3.2%, with further falls expected.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, says: "In the short term, van registrations will continue to struggle, although the truck sector is holding total CV figures close to the three-year average. In the longer term, we expect an overall and marked downward trend."

The lack of easy credit has seen operators taking contract-hire and rental options for their vehicle acquisitions.

Robin Mackonochic. British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association's (BVRLA) head of communications, says: "This apporach frees up capital for other areas of the business.

"It allows you to plan for the road ahead due to set payments making it more financially appealing."

David Farbon, commercial director for Fraikin, adds: "Once operators cross over from purchasing, they Lend to realise that contract hire is a sensible choice. It lets you predict costs and plan ahead."
