The Credit Services Association (CSA) says that few UK debt collection agencies carry out international work, although the number that do so is on the increase.

Some, including Federal Management, are developing links with foreign debt-collecting companies, so that each can act for the other when appropriate.

Marc Curtis-Smith, Federal's managing director, says: "It makes sense to link up with people on the ground in the country where the debt has to be collected. The law and conditions are different in each country and it is hard to beat local knowledge."
