Planned relocation of Welsh test site prompts operator criticism

CONCERNS HAVE been raised over the potential relocation of a Vosa test site in Llandrindod Wells, Wales, which could leave local operators with hefty fuel bills just to see whether their vehicles are roadworthy.

Vosa confirmed to CM that it was looking to relocate the site pending an offer for the land from Tesco.

A Vosa spokeswoman says: "We are looking at relocating to a convenient site. It [the current premises] is an old test station, with a corrugated iron roof and an outside toilet. It's very old, and if Tesco wants to pay for it, then that's fine."

The nearest test stations to the town in central Wales are Hereford, Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury.

Michael Gough, senior partner at Llandrindod Wells-based AE Gough & Sons, said that while it was well known that the test site would be sold to Tesco, the uncertainty of the relocation was hard to plan for. "We run 44 lorries and 10 trailers. If we have to drive to a site up to 60 miles away, that is 6,400 miles a year."

Roger Elwell, engineer at Williams Transport in the town, says: "It is easy enough for them to say they will relocate to a convenient site, but is it convenient to them or is it convenient for the people who will use the station?"
