A SHEFFIELD haulage boss and three workers have been jailed after their campaign of racial abuse against a black colleague left him a -psychological cripple".

Sheffield Crown Court heard how Rudolph Watson was stabbed with a chisel, tied to a moving fork-lift truck and wrapped in cling film while working at Tinsley-based waste disposal firm. Bruce Transport Services During his two years' employment at the firm he also suffered a torrent of verbal abuse being called"nigger"and "sambo". He was made to look at pictures of apes and monkeys put up in the canteen, and had the words "black git" scrawled across his work vest.

The ordeal left Watson with posttraumatic stress disorder and suffering nightmares.

Managing director Damian Gaunt and workers Gary Bolsover, Brian Briscoe, and Kirk Lee all pleaded guilty to harassment but denied that it was racially motivated.

Defence lawyers told the court that the defendants believed their actions to be horseplay, which had become part of the culture at the site.

Sentencing Gaunt to 18 months' imprisonment, Judge Robertshaw said that, while he had not been directly involved in the abuse, he had "turned a blind eye" to his employees' actions.

He jailed Lee and Briscoe for 15 months, and Bolsover to 17 months for their involvement in the "campaign of relentless, remorseless oppression".

As CM went to press no-one was available at Bruce Transport Services for comment.
