EXPANSION OF the TruckPol anti-truck theft unit is being delayed because of a breakdown in talks between the Road Haulage Association and the Metropolitan Police.

A business development manager was due to have been appointed after the National Stolen Lorry Load Desk was renamed TruckPol and moved from Essex to London in the spring.

The manager's brief includes boosting sponsorship and raising the unit's national profile among hauliers and police forces around the country.

Despite lengthy negotiations, the RHA and the Met are unable to agree to whom the manager should be answerable or on the contract between the two organisations.

The RHA is involved in the appointment because candidates need good contacts in road transport.B ut Detective Sergeant Mark Hooper, head ofTruckPol,says the Met may now consider making an internal appointment. "Even if there is an internal appointment, there would still be some role for the RHA. I know the Met is very happy for this project to run."

TruckPol currently has at least 30 sponsors who mostly contribute between £1 .000 and £10,000 a year. The Met estimates that around £200,000 a year is needed to pay for TruckPol's two police officers, administrative assistant and analyst, as well as the development manager.

Tony Allen. chairman of the RHA security committee, says a development manager would give TruckPol more credibility among other police forces.
