Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Lead balance weight manufacturer Hofmann Balancing Techniques warns of its concerns about the use of new internal balancing materials now on the UK market. These products, which are inserted into the tyre with the aim of reducing the imbalance of the tyre/rim assembly can, says Hofmann, make the situation worse.

Tests conducted by Automobile Engineering Management Services in the US have concluded that, in some circumstances, the amount of vibration is increased by the introduction of these balancing materials. The presence of ridges on the inner lining of the tyre will be sufficient to impede the flow of the material around the tyre, thus preventing its effective operation.

Hofmann says tyre manufacturers do not recommend the inclusion of any additional material inside the tyre void. And it says its lead balance weights are supplied to these manufacturers for use as original equipment.
