• The Transport Minister has decided to carry out a "before and after" survey of passenger travel on the Barnstaple—Ilfracombe rail service, which is to be withdrawn on October 5. It is intended that the survey should provide information about the actual impact a line closure has on the travel habits of the persons affected, in particular the regular users of the service.
. The first stage of the survey will take place during mid-September by which time most holidaymakers will have left the area, and will take the form of a questionnaire to be completed by a representative sample of rail passengers. Respondents will be asked to give their names and addresses so that follow-up inquiries can be made after the service is withdrawn.
