T-1E Milk Marketing Board is dealing 1-srlith milk hauliers' requests for increases in collection charges by inviting the haulier concerned to complete a questionnaire, part of which purports to be a schedule of the operator's costs. This schedule of costs is incomplete, as it omits all reference to garage rents, interest on capital outlay, and, in particular, establishment costs, which, of course, include management expenses, clerical charges, office rents, war-damage insurance, fire-guard expenses, heating, lighting, and a host of other items.
In Order to show how serious these omissions are, I have prepared the following statement of collection charges, first, as it will be if those items only on the Milk Marketing Board schedule are included, and, secondly, if the schedule be made complete, so as to include all the operator's expenditure.
COSTS ACCORDING TO M.M.B. SCHEDULE
Standing Charges s. d, Licences Insurance Wages. .. 219 0 0 Dire of outs'de haulage ... ... 80 0 0 the year _. 212,560 Cost of collection per iollon ... 1.25d.
The above figures relate, to the cost of one vehicle only and will he multiplied according to the number of vehicles operated, subject, of course, to modification in certain items which may diminish a little per vehicle in the case of fleets.
The omission of establishment costs is particuldrly important in this connection, because increases in operators' expenditure have been particularly heavy with regard to that item.
All milk hauliers are strongly recommended, in making their returns, to include their total costs and to make sure that the omissions in this circular from the Milk Marketing Board are
made good. S.T.R.
