1,000-mile Trial for " Alternative" Fuels.

Organized by the Societe Suisse pour l'Etude des Carburants, in conjunction with the Swiss Automobile Club, a reliability. trial of lorries and coaches using all classes of " alternative " fuel was held in Switzerland from September 8-17. The competing vehicles made eight daily runs over some of the highest passes in the

country. The, total distance covered was 1,070 miles, the daily runs ranging from 102 to 145 miles.

The points to be taken into account by the judges in making their awards will include the consumption and cost of the different fuels, the ease of starting lip, the power developed by the engine, and the general behaviour of the vehicles during the trial.

Big Plan to Improve Welsh Communications.

Big improvements in Welsh road communications are probable. A conference of west and mid-Wales county councils is being convened by Cardigan County Council with a view to formulating a scheme for a good trunk road from Fishguard to Shrewsbury, via the Cambrian coast, Aberystwyth and Cardigan.

The proposal is important to both goods and passenger-vehicle operators in South and West Wales, the border counties and the north of England. The aim is' to have the existing routes from the Cambrian coast to Shrewsbury scheduled by the Ministry of Transport as trunk roads, so that they may be developed into a main artery.

At present, the bulk of the traffic from the north of England to West Wales makes the long journey around South Wales and the border counties.

It is believed that the Government will readily further this scheme, in view of the importance of good road communications to Milford Haven, a key centre in the national rearmament and defence programme.
