A DECISION on whether trucks will be banned from using part of the Primary Route Network in Bath is due to be announced shortly, after neighbouring councils appealed.

Bath and North East Somerset Council (Banes) said its plan to introduce an 18-tonne weight restriction on vehicles turning between the A36 Bathwick Street and A36 Beckford Road will improve air quality and reduce congestion in the city.

A ban on U-turning traffic is also proposed a quarter of a mile south of the junction, to prevent LGVs avoiding the turning ban. The proposals sparked anger in councils in Somerset and Wiltshire because they fear the effect they will have on their roads and they have appealed to the Department for Transport (DfT). The Highways Agency has also appealed against Banes’s plan (CM 30 August).

The Bradford on Avon Area Board thought a decision by the transport secretary would be given in September, but a Banes’s spokesman said: “The latest, as far as we are aware, is that it’s on the desk of the DfT. We are expecting a decision now.” The DfT did not respond as CM went to press.
