Second reading for Halfon fuel tax bill welcomed

THE ROAD Haulage Association (RHA) has stressed to hauliers the importance of Conservative MP Robert Halfon’s private member’s bill, which calls for the tax taken from every purchase of petrol and diesel to be clearly printed on all forecourt receipts.
“It would give hauliers the per fect tool to negotiate rates with their customers,” said Kate Gibbs, head of media relations at the RHA.
Using a parliamentary procedure known as the 10-minute rule, Halfon this week (16 October) secured a second reading of the bill, scheduled for 30 November.
However, many bills that are introduced under this rule rarely progress much further due to the low priority they are given in the schedule and often there is insufficient time for the debate to be completed.
Backing the bill, Peter Carroll, founder of FairFuelUK, said: “I’m delighted it’s got a second read ing, but we have to keep behind it now to drive it through because at some point the government will probably try and stop it.
“The battle to get these figures shown on the till receipt is the first step in our fight to stop the government adding a further 3ppl in fuel duty on 1 January,” said Carroll.
