• Road haulage has generated its share of multi-millionaires, according to the Sunday Times' Book of the Rich (due out on 25 October).
baterlink founders Richard Gabriel and his mother Rose Bugden, says the book, are worth about 220m. Interlink has developed into a national service with 120 area franchises. In the early days it charged 28,500 for a franchise: today they cost around 2250,000. The mother-and-son team still control 70% of Interlink shares.
AWD owner David J B Brown, is estimated to have a personal fortune of 221m_ He netted 230m by giving Caterpillar exclusive rights to sell his patented four-wheel-drive vehicles. He bought Bedford Trucks in 1987 for an estimated 220m and set up AVID.
