Watford owner-operator Ram Janam was asked by the Inland Revenue to produce used tacho charts dating back six years. "But I'd only kept them since 1989, and I was about to throw those away," says Janam.

When Owner-Operators UK contacted the Inland Revenue on Janam's behalf, managing director Rob McHugh was told there was "no policy" on retaining tacho charts, but any haulier was advised to keep its business records for as long as possible. An Inland Revenue spokesman told Commercial Motor that a six-year period was not enforced, but it was common to look at tacho charts over one year old.
