• Next Tuesday (30 October) Craven Tasker will give a first public showing of its RoadRailer intermodal trailer, built for rail-road distribution consortium Charterail.
The 13.6m trailer, which will be exhibited at the official opening of Task's new headquarters in Doncaster, is based on an American design.
Charterail, which is backed by GKN and British Rail, is taking on three prototypes built by Task: managing director Dennis Kenyon is confident that an order for about 60 will follow.
The design is unlike most other swap-body systems designed for rail in that the entire chassis, complete with wheels, is unhitched from the tractive unit and lifted on to rail bogies. The axles and wheels retract into the chassis.
