Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

27) on Foden's 3306 ATAACpowered S 104 tractive unit and we were disappointed with the fuel consumption figure you reported. We believe your readers should be informed that the unit tested was a prototype engine installation not yet approved for delivery to a customer.

The installation has subsequently been changed in the air to air (ATA) core and piping area as follows:

fl A larger capacity, less restrictive ATA core has been provided.

[]The engine piping between the turbocharger and the ATA core has been redesigned to further improve air flow.

Our retest results indicate a substantial improvement in turbocharger performance, insuring proper fuel efficiency and overall engine performance. These changes will be implemented in production vehicles.

The Foden Engineering Test Team now have our (Caterpillar's) full approval on their 3306 ATAAC installation. We believe a similar road test of a "production approved" vehicle would demonstrate a marked improvement in performance and fuel efficiency. For your information — we have recently received a comparative fuel consumption tabulation on eighteen 3306 ATAAC powered trucks in North America operating in four different fleets. Results were as follows: total miles, 140,846 (226,620km); average mpg of 18 trucks equipped with CAT 3306 ATAAC, 7.89(35.8 lit/1001m); fleet average mpg, 7.14 (39.6 lit/100km) (all vehicles); 3306 ATAAC, improvement over fleet

average, 9.60% (fleets use CAT and other N. Americamade engines).

Note that, these fleets use vehicles rated at 80,000lbs (36.3 tonnes). However, the average actual weight was not available. A "Jake Brake" option will become available for the 3306 by mid-1987.
