• Following the recent regional wage claims submitted by the Metropolitan and South East, Southern and Eastern regions of the TGWU, the union's Scottish area has now submitted its 1987 claim to the Road Haulage Association — as the employers representatives on joint industrial councils.
The TGWU Scottish region wants an 28 across-the-board weekly increase for its drivers, and a 22.82 rise in the subsistence allowance — an increase of 23%.
It is also asking for a cut in the basic working week from 40 to 39 hours, as well as improvements in sickness and HGV severance payments.
The claim, however, has been greeted with little enthusiasm by the RHA Scottish manager Tom Brattin who told CM "Whoever drafted the claim has little understanding of the current financial situation of the haulage industry".
