• French truck rental and contract hire cmpany VIA, announced its entry into the UK market at the Motor Show this week.
It has signed an agreement with Renault Truck Industries to offer truck rental out of four RT1 dealers in London, Birmingham, Cleveland and Glasgow. The rental fleet already stands at 34 — all Renault/Dodge — in the 7.5-38-tonne GVW range; VIA is to approach other manufacturers with a view to establishing a similar arrangement, although it has no plans to operate its own depots.
General manager Geoffrey Mitchell says that spot-rental is the company's first move, but the longer term aim is contract hire, with or without drivers.
By the end of 1987 VIA hopes to have 100 vehicles on spot-rental, and 50-60 on contract hire.
In France, VIA has over 5,000 vehicles, specialising in vehicle and driver contract hire.
