TOMORROW sees the introduction in Hampstead Garden Suburb of London's first Dial-a-Bus service. It is the latest in a series of London Transport experiments requested by the Greater London Council to test novel types of bus services.
Hampstead Garden Suburb was selected because so many people (81 per cent) have telephones, there is no bus service in the area, and
anyway the roads are unsuitable for large buses.
The flat fare for adults and children will be 15p, while concessionary permit holders travelling at certain times will pay only 5p.
Two Ford Transit minibuses will cover an area of 11/2 square miles containing 6,000 people. The service will be reviewed after six months. Operating costs should total £45,000 a year.
