Speculation is now bubbling about who is going to be made chairman of the Scottish Transport Group which will be responsible for the State-owned passenger services under the Transport Bill. I hear that the president of the CWS, Lord Taylor, is considered a likely choice. In which case, if the English precedent is followed, Moris Little, chairman of the Scottish Bus Group, is the natural choice for chief executive.

Meanwhile, I gather that there has been a nice little tug-of-war going on about just which Ministry the STG should be responsible to. The Scottish Office naturally wishes to retain control of passenger transport services, but there are fears that if the proposed Ministry for Nationalized Industries ever becomes a reality, the STG would be swallowed up, along with the hydroelectric board and other activities north of the border.
