Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

What effect would a Channel Tunnel have on the future pattern of transport operations? This question has a way of cropping up whenever there is a discussion on cross-channel ferries. A great many problems to do with this point were thrashed out in the North early this month when Thoresen called together representatives of a variety of interests concerned with through transport to Europe.

The experts' feeling on the Chunnel seems to be that natural growth in traffic will largely account for the new capacity. Certainly that was the view of Robert Kirton, Thoresen's freight sales manager. M. Philippe Prevot, representing the port of Le Havre, saw no likelihood of a diminution in the use of the expanding facilities that are being offered there to road transport operators.
