Nostalgia was in the air for the older members at the IRTE meeting in Manchester recently when Albert Wood of the CWS recalled something of the enterprise and initiative that were demanded from both driver and mechanic in the 1920s. He said that city dwellers might not realize it, but animals can see their way in fog without trouble.
Once when he was brought to a halt in impenetrable conditions in a remote part of Yorkshire a horse came to his rescue. They had been stopped a while when Mr. Wood's mate, an ex-farm worker, discovered a horse that could be borrowed. The countryman quickly made an emergency bridle and rode the horse along the highway with the lorry following. They thus not only speeded up their delivery but, what seemed more important at the moment, were able to dispel their cold and hunger at an all-night cafe.
