pay deal from our political correspondent
• The Prices and Incomes Board has turned down a three-part pay and productivity deal for Dundee busmen agreed between the Corporation and the TGWU.
The agreement comprised a £1-per-week basic pay increase; an additional payment of a lOs a week bonus for acceptance of oneman operation; and a further payment of a 3s 6d weekly bonus arising from new operating schedules and the introduction of highcapacity vehicles.
The Board can find no local justification for the basic rate rise which is in line with the NJIC award for municipal busmen and subject to a standstill order until December 28 next.
The lOs bonus proposal is rejected on the grounds that it would not satisfy the necessary conditions for a full and firm agreement on one-man operation.
And the 3s 6d productivity bonus is vetoed because the Board does not consider it would bring any significant rise in output.
The report says that the agreement, if implemented, would increase the deficit on Dundee Corporation transport—£39,939 in 1968/69—up to £110,000 and a seven or eight per cent fares rise would be needed to cover the extra cost.
The solution, it is stated, to the undertaking's "large financial problems" is a more efficient use of labour and equipment.
