'THE removal of purchase tax from vehicles was highly desirable, but the country's basic concern was stability in costs. This was stated by Sir David Eccles, President of the Board of Trade, when he spoke at the annual dinner of the Society. of Motor Manufacturers and Traders on Tuesday,
He thought that there would be unique opportunities if Britain entered the European Free Trade Area. A result would be a strong ineentive to other countries to set up factories in Britain.
Mr. A. S. Dick. president of the Society, said that it was easy. to be lulled into a false sense of security by impressive figures of sales at home and abroad. The effects of restrictions on the home market through hire-purchase regulations and purchase tax made the achievement of cheaper selling abroad impossible.
In the past 10 years, said Mr. Dick, there had been five Ministers of Transport, and new highway construction amounted to 3.7 miles per Minister.
