The mechanism itself is the vertical screw and nut type and, when hand-operated, is cc4trolled by means of the usual handle fitting on the square on the end of the horizontal shaft disposed just behind the driver's cab. The transmission from the engine is by means of a roller chain fitting snugly inside the side frame, and driving the same shaft as that which is operated by hand, through the medium of a pair of gear wheels. The brakes on this wagon are operated by a pedal fitted with a heel-applied ratchet. They are compensated in a simple and substantial manner.
