THE Orwell electric vehicle is of the twin motor type, one to each driving wheel, there being one gear reduction in a casing bolted to that of the motor, and the final reduction thence from each by chain to the rear wheel of the vehicle. This arrangement simplifies the?consiruction, inasmuch as it eliminates all need for a differential gear. The batteries are contained in two boxes which run on angle iron rails bolted to the frame. Solid rubber tyres are fitted to the disc wheels, and there are two sets of brakes, both arranged to operate on drums in the rear wheels.
The other electric is a tipping wagon, the tipping gear being electrically. operated by a small electric motor disposed just behind the driver's seat and operating by means of chains and gearing. The mechanism appears to be extraordinarily light and compact corn
pared with the other tipping gears. The bodywork itself is for use in municipal work, for refuse collection, arid an interesting feature is the arrangement of the rear doors which are hinged from the sides instead of from the top or bottoma single latch suffices to secure both'.
The Ransome steam wagon is of the most modern type, and was quite recently described in these columns. An • interesting feature is its front axle, which embodies Ackerman steering arranged in an unusual manner.. The axle itself, is pivoted at the centre to allow flexibility of movement in a vertical place, and jaws are formed at, each end of it, and these accommodate the steering pivots, each of which is really a bearing for the stub axle, -tr,4ich is actually secured to the front wifiel. The cast-steel wheels are strongly made, and dished so is to eaure, niently allow of this arrangement of steering pivot. The front axle itself is stayed to a bracket attached to the boiler by means of a triangular radius rod.
